Roosevelt University is a 32-story academic building, It is located in Chicago, Illinois and it is a unique vertical campus that is LEED certified Gold. It houses classrooms, laboratories, offices, dorm rooms, a dining hall, fitness facilities and student services all under one roof. The lighting design approach for Roosevelt University – Wabash Development Project – offers a comfortable and enjoyable experience for the user, by providing solutions that are flexible, functional, energy efficient, low maintenance, as well as attractive and cost efficient. The lighting fixtures were carefully selected to integrate seamlessly with the architecture of the building to maintain a very simple aesthetic. The design achieves the required light levels and visual comfort by the use of direct and/or indirect lighting. The use of vertical illumination highlights the architecture and responds to the specific needs of the user. This also improves the perception of brightness and allows for lower light levels throughout the space reducing energy consumption. Changes to light levels were carefully considered in transitional spaces without compromising visual comfort.
